  • What is a dental emergency?

There are various kinds of dental emergencies, including intense, sudden toothaches, incidents that result in chipped or cracked teeth, loose or damaged restorations, or teeth that are lost or significantly damaged. To determine if you’re facing a dental emergency, consider these questions:

    • Are you experiencing intense pain or significant swelling?
    • Is there a toothache causing you constant pain that won’t go away?
    • Have you got a tooth that’s loose or has been knocked out?
    • Is there swelling in your cheeks or face associated with a toothache?
    • Do you have severe sensitivity in a tooth?
    • Is there ongoing bleeding in your mouth?
    • Have you sustained an injury to your jaw?

Typically, a dental issue that needs immediate action to halt bleeding, relieve intense pain, or save a tooth is deemed an emergency.

  • What is not a dental emergency?

If you can manage the issue on your own for a few days without immediate dental care, it’s probably not a dental emergency. For instance, a chipped or cracked tooth warrants urgent attention only if the break causes significant pain, leaves sharp fragments that could injure your mouth, or if there’s significant trauma. Similarly, if you’ve lost a crown or a filling, it’s generally safe to wait a few days before visiting your dentist.

  • What’s the best way to handle a dental emergency?

In a dental emergency, your first step should be to contact your dentist unless the situation is so severe that it necessitates immediate emergency room care.
You can take action at home to alleviate discomfort and improve your condition for dental emergencies. These include:

    • Making a mouthwash by dissolving a teaspoon of salt in a mug of warm water to soothe discomfort.
    • If you have a tooth knocked out, keep it in a glass of milk to preserve it until you can visit your dentist.
    • Use dental floss to remove any particles that might be causing pressure on the gums.
    • Applying a cold compress reduces swelling and alleviates pain in the affected area.
    • Rinsing your mouth with diluted Hydrogen Peroxide to eliminate bacteria and prevent infection.
    • Taking over-the-counter pain relievers to help manage the pain.

These measures can provide temporary relief and are beneficial while you arrange to see your dentist.
